Gyudmed Tara Temple is the New York branch of Gyudmed Monastery, one of the two great tantric colleges of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in Tibet in 1433 by Jetsun Sherab Sengye, a foremost disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, Gyudmed has been a center for the study of tantra and the sacred Guhyasamaja lineage. After 1959, the monastery was re-established in exile in Karnataka, South India, where it continues to train monks.
Founded in 2021, Gyudmed Tara Temple is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the USA, carrying this lineage forward in New York. Located in Elmhurst, Queens, our temple is dedicated to Tara, the Buddha of compassion and swift liberating action. We offer a home for prayer, pujas, and teachings guided by ordained monks. We also organize events as teaching and a religious gathering place for the Tibetan community in New York and New Jersey, and for anyone curious to learn about Tibetan Buddhism and culture.
