A Refuge in the
heart of New York

Gyudmed Tara Temple is the New York home of Gyudmed Monastery — one of the two great tantric colleges of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism..

a peaceful place to sit, learn and offer prayers

Gyudmed Tara Temple New York

Gyudmed Tara Temple is the New York home of Gyudmed Monastery — one of the two great tantric colleges of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in Tibet in 1433 and carried into exile in Karnataka, South India, the lineage reached Elmhurst, Queens in 2021 as a registered 501(c)(3), dedicated to Tārā, the Buddha of compassion and swift liberating action.

Monks keep the daily prayers and pujas; students come for teachings, study, and the quiet of the shrine room. Beginners and lifelong practitioners sit side by side. Come once for the quiet, or every week to study and sit with the community — and you will be offered a white scarf at the threshold, as one is at a Tibetan door.

Prayers, Teachings and Events

Our Programs

Daily Prayers & Pujas

Monks perform the traditional prayers and rituals of the Gyudmed liturgy. Join the service, sponsor a puja for a loved one, or sit in quiet reflection through prayer times

Buddhist Teachings & Discourses

Lectures and study sessions on Buddhist philosophy, led by knowledgeable teachers and monks — approachable for newcomers, still deep enough for longtime practitioners

Visiting High Lamas

We periodically invite high lamas of the Gelug tradition for special teachings and empowerments — rare opportunities to receive direct transmission and blessings

Tibetan Cultural Events

Losar, His Holiness’s birthday, and the great days of the Tibetan calendar bring the community together and keep traditions alive in the diaspora
